A portrait of the artist as a young woman. A novel about not just discovering but inventing oneself.

The year is 1995, and email is new. Selin, the daughter of Turkish immigrants, arrives for her freshman year at Harvard. She signs up for classes in subjects she has never heard of, befriends her charismatic and worldly Serbian classmate, Svetlana, and, almost by accident, begins corresponding with Ivan, an older mathematics student from Hungary. Selin may have barely spoken to Ivan, but with each email they exchange, the act of writing seems to take on new and increasingly mysterious meanings.

Finding Drama in Solitary Confinement Image

Istanbul’s Leading Contemporary Art Space Reopens in a Very Different Turkey

ISTANBUL — Last month, more than two years after it had closed for “technical reasons,”  SALT Beyoğlu  celebrated its reopening. It was a jubilant moment for the Turkish art scene to be sure, but an occasion I could not help but see with some degree of trepidation considering the dire state of  free speech in Turkey today . The reopening included significant fanfare and marked the inauguration of a major exhibition,  Continuity Error , consisting of work by  Aydan Murtezaoğlu  and  Bülent Şangar , notable figures in the country’s art scene who emerged in the 1990s but have been largely overlooked since. The show presents both newly commissioned and older works, documentation, and works the artists executed together and separately, the most ambitious of which are two site-specific performances, “Unemployed Employees – I found you a new job!” (2006–18) and “Lab Created” (2006–18), the latter of which I saw as containing a soft activism. https://hyperallergic.com/443986/s

Turkish Ambassador’s Home Has Deep Jazz Roots

Washington D.C. is home to many embassies and diplomatic offices representing the nations of the world. Many ambassadors in Washington live in large, beautiful buildings with rich, interesting histories. One of them is home to Turkey’s ambassador, Serdar Kilic. It is called Everett House. It is in a neighborhood known for its many embassies and diplomatic buildings. The home was built in 1914 for a wealthy businessman named Edward H. Everett.
